Dear EIS Parents,

I want to thank all of you for greeting me so warmly these first few days of school.  It is truly exciting to be at a school with such gifted teachers and supportive parents.  This will be my 30th year as an elementary school counselor and I have learned so much over the years from the, literally, thousands of children, parents and teachers with whom I have worked.

As a counselor, I am blessed because I always know that every day I can make a positive difference in the lives of young children.  Nothing is more rewarding to me than when a former student returns and says something like..."Mrs. Pettus, I still remember the lesson you taught us...the story you told us...the song we always sang."

One more important thing I want you to know about me is that I once had three little ones in elementary school.  There were many times I needed to talk to a counselor or a teacher (sometimes with tears in my eyes) about one of my precious children.  I will never forget how kind and understanding and helpful those significant people were.  Now, as a counselor, I have the opportunity to return those many kindnesses extended to me. Thus, whether I am talking to an entire class, or an individual child or a parent I ask myself, "How would I want my child to be treated? How would I want to be treated if I were the parent seeking help."  I hope you will all feel comfortable visiting with me.  The well-being of your children is my top priority.

I can't wait to meet your wonderful children in classroom guidance!
